Summer Days Out

With our Group Rider and Network Group Rider tickets slashed to half price throughout the school holidays, here’s our suggestions for some of Nottingham’s best places to take the family and keep the kids entertained this summer, along with details about the best bus to catch.

 There are also some exclusive discounts and special offers available for you when you travel there by bus and present your Group Rider or Network Group Rider ticket at the venue.

Attraction Best Bus to Catch Special Group Rider Ticket Offers
Arboretum is a Green Flag Award winning park and is Nottingham's oldest public park and the one that is closest to the city centre. It is a historic, beautifully maintained park and contains a host of original features that make this site unique within the city including the fine collection of trees that lend the site its name.
Take the tram to High School or Nottingham Trent University and walk  
Arnot Hill Park is a quiet, but popular local park in Arnold, which is home to a fantastic play park, aviary, sensory gardens, lake and open space. Lime Line 58 from Parliament Street (near Spar) and alight on Nottingham Road near Sainsbury’s.
Buses operate every 10 minutes.
 
Bestwood Country Park is a 650-acre park on the northern fringe of Nottingham boasts an incredible variety of different wildlife habitats. From Mill Lakes teeming with water birds, to meadows full of wild flowers, ancient oak woodland and a reclaimed coal tip, Bestwood has a landscape which reflects the varied history of Nottinghamshire itself. For example, the Winding Engine House, a splendid piece of industrial archaeology, is a memorial to the coal mining industry once so important to our economy.
Purple Line 88 from Parliament Street (near Burger King) and alight on Bewcastle Road.
Buses operate every 20 minutes.
 
Bulwell Bogs is a Green Flag Award winning park, found in the Heart of Bulwell Town Centre and boasts one of the only two paddling pools still in the City, a comprehensive play ground, toilets, picnic areas, historic interpretation boards and a promenade along the River Lean, lined with cherry's, perennial borders and seating all within a site encompassing less than one hectare of land.
Take the tram to Bulwell and Bulwell Bogs is adjacent.
Catch the Brown Line 17 or Yellow Line 68, 69 from Milton Street to Bulwell Bus Station, with buses running every 10 minutes
 
Colwick Country Park is a large and diverse area of water, woodland and meadows providing a perfect backdrop for a variety of both wildlife and recreational activities. The park also has a rich diversity of wildlife from butterflies and dragonflies to a large number of birds that visit the park, especially at migration time. This includes the nationally important population of wildfowl that are present in the wintertime
Catch the Red Line 44 from Queen Street, running every 10 minutes to Colwick Loop Road.

Galleries of Justice Museum, based at Nottingham's old courthouse and gaol. You will be delving in to the dark and disturbing past of crime and punishment as you travel back in time to the days when Nottingham Shire Hall was the only place in the UK where you could be tried, incarcerated and hanged on the front steps, all in the name of justice.
Catch any NCT bus into the City Centre and walk.  
Great Central Railway – the UK's only double track, main line heritage railway. It’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other – just as it was when steam ruled the rails. An award winning attraction with lots to see and enjoy.
South Notts 1 from Beastmarket Hill in the Old Market Square through to Loughborough, Baxter Gate.
Buses operate every 30 minutes, hourly on Sundays.

Green’s Windmill and Science Centre, a working windmill and popular museum & Science Centre with FREE admission Catch the Lilac Line 23, 24 to Sneinton Dale.
Buses operate every 10 minutes during the daytime from King Street.
 
Highfields Park is a 121 acre park, well endowed with magnificent trees, wildflower meadows, exotic plantings and water features. It also includes on site activities, including boat hire, motor launch trips, bowling, croquet, putting, children's play area and a variety of Lake Pavilion events.
Maroon Line 13, 14 from Beastmarket Hill in the Old Market Square stop nearby University Boulevard.
Buses run every 15 minutes.
 
Museum of Nottingham Life at Brewhouse Yard is housed within five 17th century cottages where you can learn about the people of Nottingham through the objects made, used or owned and the stories they tell us. Catch any NCT bus into the City Centre and walk along Friar Lane towards the Castle and then down to Brewhouse Yard.
Maroon Line 13, 14 from Beastmarket Hill in the Old Market Square stop nearby on Castle Boulevard.
 
National Ice Centre – Ice skating is a cool experience and where better to give it a go than at the National Ice Centre. There are a range of ice skating sessions on offer to suit all ages and abilities.
Catch any NCT bus into the City Centre and walk down to the Ice Centre.
Services 21, 23, 24, 25, 27 and 44 from King Street and Queen Street stop nearby on Southwell Road.

Nottingham Castle is a magnificent 17th century ducal mansion built on the site of the original Medieval Castle, with spectacular views across the city. Nottingham Castle is a vibrant museum and art gallery housing collections of silver, glass, decorative items, visual arts, paintings and Nottinghamshire Archaeology and History. Catch any NCT bus into the City Centre and walk along Friar Lane towards the Castle  
Nottingham Children's Festival - Take your children along for a fantastic quest seeking summer holiday that's full of fun and lots of free activities! From 1 - 16 August 2009 at various locations around Nottingham. Dependent on location – use www.triptimes.co.uk to plan your journey
 
Nottingham Riverside Festival – 31st July until 2nd August. Experience Nottingham's Riverside Festival that offers lots of entertainment and activities for festival-goers to enjoy, with a colourful and vibrant programme of live music, performance, arts and fairground attractions offering something for everyone. Green Line 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 from Victoria Centre (Wilkinsons) or Angel Row in the Old Market Square.
Buses operate every 3-5 minutes to Trent Bridge, Victoria Embankment
 
Nottingham Riviera - Three hundred tons of sand will transform the Old Market Square into a seaside playground, complete with Nottingham rock, beach cafes, bucket and spades stalls, flags, bunting and fairground rides. A large paddling pool will complement the Square's water feature and there will be tables, deck chairs and sun loungers along a Long Row promenade that will seat around 200 people. Catch any NCT bus into the City Centre and walk to the Old Market Square.  
Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre – lots to see and do at this local attraction in Ruddington. It boasts steam trains, railway workshops and signal boxes, a miniature railway and a classic bus collection.

Scooby Doo, Scooby-Doo and the gang are back!  Following their sell-out success with ‘Stagefright’, the ultimate cartoon classic bursts onto to the stage once again with ‘Scooby-Doo and the Pirate Ghost’ - a brand new show to entertain the whole family. Southwell Minster, the Cathedral of Nottinghamshire, is rich historical and architectural interest. It provides fine examples of the main styles of architecture, particularly Norman and early English. The latter is very evident in the 13th century Chapter House, one of the Minsters most glorious features with some of the finest examples of naturalistic carvings in the country. Admission Free, but donations requested. Catch the Pathfinder 100 to Southwell from Queen Street, running every 20 minutes.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic 31st July 2009 at Woodthorpe Park Twiggy & Emma host their Teddy Bear’s Picnic! Join them with your picnic and favourite teddy, as they present a live performance from Angelina Ballerina and Postman Pat! There’s face-painting, music, a treasure hunt, plus the chance to win top prizes! Lime Line 56, 58 or 59 from Parliament Street (near Spar) and alight on Mansfield Road at the top of Sherwood.

The Workhouse, Southwell – The best preserved 19th Century Workhouse in England. Explore the workshops and dormitories of the early welfare institution and meet the 19th century inhabitants with the audio guide. Catch the Pathfinder 100 to Southwell from Queen Street, running every 20 minutes.

Wollaton Hall is a spectacular Elizabethan mansion in the heart of Nottingham. It is a prominent Grade One Listed building and following its major programme of restoration, visitors are welcome to visit the hall and park. FREE admission to Park, Halls and Museums.
Catch the Pink Ecolink 30 to Wollaton Road or Orange Line 35, 36 to Derby Road.
Buses operate from Victoria Centre, Milton Street outside John Lewis.
 
Woodthorpe Grange is a Green Flag Award winning park. Within the park lies The Grange, a 19th century Grade II listed manor house which sits amidst a mix of landscapes and includes formal gardens, green houses, grassland and small wooded areas. An 18 hole pitch and putt course and two football pitches attracts sports enthusiasts whilst the Tropical House, 'sunken garden' with water feature and innovative train sculpture at the entrance to the old railway bridge appeals to visitors from both the city and wider surrounding area.

  • Group Rider and Network Group Rider offers are only available on the date of issue, as shown on the bus ticket
  • The bus ticket must be presented upon arrival

For the National Ice Centre, the following conditions also apply:

  • One adult (over age 18) must be present to validate
  • Not to be used in conjunction with any other offer
  • Damaged or photocopied bus tickets will not be accepted
  • Not valid at themed nights or parties
  • Management reserve the right to refuse admission

 

For the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre, the following conditions also apply:
